Petition: AUB administration, terminate the contract with Nestle Toll House
Disclaimer: While we are well aware of the fact that the AUB administration has a long history of brushing away petitions regarding various issues, and while we fully understand the fact that a large number of signatories is not sufficient for the attainment of our goal (termination of Nestle's contract), we are forming this petition as a means of documenting support for the cause, and a platform to rally for upcoming escalation tactics.
We are a group of students at the American University of Beirut who demand the following from our university administration:
The immediate termination of Nestle's contract for the operation of the Toll House, and the placement of the space under a local company's control, or that of the university (as was the case in the past).
Nestle, one of the world's biggest corporations, is the subject of our boycott campaign for the following reasons among many others:
- Its role in supporting "Israeli" apartheid:Nestle builds factories on stolen Palestinian lands and therefore sells products that directly result from the apartheid. Nestle also received the Jubilee Award, "the highest tribute ever awarded by the State of Israel in recognition of those individuals and organizations, that through their investments and trade relationships, have done the most to strengthen the Israeli economy" by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in 1998 - attesting to its long history of contributing to the settler's economic power.
- Child Slavery: Nestle is fingered as a culprit in the use of child labor in cacao plantations, presumably because child slavery radically reduce the prices of chocolate production.
- Infant formula:Nestle is the target of harsh attacks by human-rights organization because it aggressively markets baby food around the world in breach of international marketing standards, contributing to the unnecessary death and suffering of infants.
As a result of these few factors and the larger constellation of human rights infringements that Nestle commits on a day to day basis, we are initiating a call for students, faculty, and staff to support us throughout the process of pressuring the AUB administration into full divestment from Nestle.
For more information regarding this campaign and our upcoming tactics, or any suggestions you may have, please contact us on :
We, the undersigned students, faculty, and staff, request the American University of Beirut administration to immediately terminate its contract with Nestle Toll House, and to communicate to the AUB community a serious intention to fully divest from Nestle.
21 OCT. 2016 — After the success of our first blockade event in gaining support for our cause, and in the process of keeping the pressure on the AUB administration, we invite AUB students, faculty, and staff to join us for a follow-up one-and-a-half hour blockade of the Nestle Toll House on Wednesday the 26th of October from 11:30 am to 1 pm.
